Battle Swarms

Global Guerrillas has had a series of posts on BattleSwarms and other military technological developments including self-guided bullets. I suppose it will not be long before we see bullets behaving like this.

Global Guerillas author, John Robb, flagged BattleSwarms here in 2004. He is a profound thinker whose ideas I do not come across elsewhere. Robb’s book,
Brave New War: The Next Stage of Terrorism and the End of Globalization is well worth checking out.

Make sure you watch the video of the battle swarm, it sent shivers up my spine and spurred this post.

 

 
Spherical Flying Machine

This video of Spherical Flying Machines taking off vertically, flying fast horizontally and simply rolling along the ground would be mind blowing a decade ago. It still is very impressive, especially given it is built using around US$1,400 worth of parts. Scroll down the comments to the link for clips of Verticopters and Flightships. Role on the 3D printing of such flying machines for a song. Then make them more powerful and larger as well as a whole lot smaller. Add in autonomous algorithms and you have something that makes Predators look like a blunderbuss.

I suspect US aircraft carriers will make juicy targets should they come up against a technologically advanced opponent. Their fate might mimic that of battle ships, masters in one world war only to find themselves highly vulnerable in the next. Whatever transpires vis-a-vis aircraft carriers, the next world war sure is going to be different, even if it lasts more than a few seconds. Miniaturization and growth of computing power could combine to make deadly swarms intent on eradicating human life. Visions of Skynet come to mind. The exponential technological growth curve clearly holds peril as well as promise.

The educational bubble may have burst, but there could be scope for more schools such as this – plenty of peril to go with the promise. I’d suggest taking out life insurance and income protection prior to enrolling.

 
Gaddafi dead

It’s Good to see the West spending its national treasure helping people who murder unarmed prisoners to the cry of Allah Akbar. Don’t you think it’s odd that our media don’t seem to think there is anything wrong with this? Would they have cut Bush or Howard similar slack?

No doubt Australians are also pleased with this use of their taxes:

‘We are proud of the fact that we have been the third largest donor in the world for Libya’s humanitarian needs during the civil war’ Kevin Rudd

Hopefully it will help secure their vote for a United Nations Security Council seat for Australia. I can’t help but think that our Kevin has long since crossed the line of acceptable conduct in using our taxes to further his ambitions.

Of course, Gaddafi was a despotic tyrant. He was also an unarmed prisoner murdered in cold blood. Two wrongs do not make a right. I also suspect the lack of attention to this is yet another egregious example of media bias.

In days gone by I would have dismissed this out of hand. Now I am not so sure. To my mind this uncertainty highlights just how far trust in the fundamental integrity and decency of Western governments is being destroyed by the current crop of politicians:

Hillary Clinton knew of Qaddafi ‘White Flag’ truce: US drone fired at Qaddafi convoy after negotiated truce

Libyan Leader Muammar Qaddafi was traveling under a negotiated “White Flag” truce last Thursday in an agreement to leave Libya. More claims from sources inside Misrata, Libya that the Libyan National Transitional Council did in fact agree to allow Qaddafi and his convoy safe passage out of Libya.

In addition rebel sources in Misrata claim US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was informed of the “White Flag” truce negotiated and agreed to by Libya’s NTC while visiting Libya Wednesday October 19.

A widely read Internet blog site Larry Sinclair.org reveals the above information noting that the site received them from reliable sources inside Libya.

The question now emerge is whether Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama engage in the firing on a White Flag convoy with the intent to assist in the capture and murder of Libyan Leader Muammar Qaddafi?

Of course one message existing and future tyrants will learn is not to give up their nuclear weapons programmes. Whatever reduction in the spread of weapons of mass destruction may have occurred due to the invasion of Iraq as suggested here, it surely will have been undone by the NATO action in Libya.  The likes of North Korea and Pakistan will surely draw the obvious conclusions.
