This video of police apparently shooting a photographer demonstrates just how much the militarisation of the police in the USA is undermining liberty.
Police shootings of innocent citizens in mistaken “no knock” raids and harassing photographers are manifestations of this process. What’s wrong with waiting for a suspect to leave a house and then arresting them?
It also highlights the dangers of a department of homeland security. Local law enforcement funded and answerable to the local community is a much more difficult tool to use for enforcing national despotism than a national force. With a local model some forces may perform inappropriately, but the nation as a whole will not as a consequence slide into tyranny. While the UK has regional police forces, they were all subject to national incentives. Resulting in a slide into political correctness as detailed here. The consequences of the nationalisation of law enforcement via the Department of Homeland Security remains to be seen.
As for the Occupy Wall Street Protests. Yes there are socialist scum bags involved with the movement. Yes there are criminals in the camps. But there is also rampant corruption and crony capitalism in the USA. Given the inevitable adjustments, protests are inevitable. Lets hope they take place through the ballot box and achieve change peacefully.
